Clay's take on the World Sprint Distance race
in CCCccanada (was cold there I got told....) in
June 08
(edited for the interest of readability by
non-text-language-readers by Justine R.)
Hay ya all down there still in big bad NZ. Clay
here with a update…
Well I have raced today in the world sprint
distance in age 20-24 m…
It all started at 4.30am over here on Friday 6th
of June with a good brecy and some amp up songs.
Then 5.30am head down to transition to get body
marked but for us it was freezing cold and
raining dam it. Ok skip a little bit and get to
the start of the race. We all line up on the
beach after being told that the water was
sitting at 11.8 degrees. Well the starter came
on and with a hoot of the horn we were off. We
all jump in with the water freezing our faces
and making our feet numb. I got a good start and
started to climb over people that was fun haha
and the swim was around 950m not 750m as we
thought it would be. We head to the beach and
start to make it out of the water with so many
people saying go Kiwi it was really cool. Well
it was hard running out of the water as we
couldnt feel our feet. Now into transition with
a quick change out of the wetty i was off on the
bike. The bike was wet and cold it was not that
nice just in my tri suit a little cold but i
took a hardin up pill haha and got it done.
After 3 laps of the bike the feet were ice
blocks so as i got off my bike it was so hard to
run as my feet were so cold . But now out onto
the run i started off not so good for about 500m
with my feet defrosting but after that i was
away and getting into a nice rhythym of running
and i only got passed by a GB person and i
passed 1 other person. Now i was down for that
home straight with a USA guy behind me. I
started 2 sprint and got over the line in 4th
place 30sec behind 3rd place and a time of
1:13:52.39.
cheers, Clay

Fundraising for TriNZ Trainingcamp in
Gisborne
We gave our Juniors Sam, Leighton and Katie a
chance to raise some funds for the TriNZ
Trainingcamp in Gisborne last July - they did a
great job sitting in the forest for hours and
directing MTB riders in the right direction at
the Nduro races, and yes, Mothers and Teachers
got roped into it as well!
Here is Leighton's report:
First of all I would like to thank the Rotorua
Rats Club, Dean and Kat from the Winter N-Duro
Series, for the money they gave me to attend the
Triathlon Camp held in Gisborne from the 13th
July – 18th July. Thank you all so much.
Last year’s camp was held in Taupo, and I must
admit it was not what I had expected and I was
not sure if I was going to attend this year’s
camp? Emails where received and the criteria to
attend the camp e.g. times for each discipline
where quite tough. So I looked forward to a camp
where I would learn a lot and be pushed. The
whole group worked group at this camp, instead
of in separate groups, and I much preferred this
as you could push yourself against the older
kids and got to know each other. Camp was
everything I thought it would be, the sessions
were hard and I learnt a lot. I came away
feeling totally exhausted, I felt that I had
given and done my best, I had met a lot of new
people, I really enjoyed it.
After the Camp we were given the opportunity to
attend a Camp in Australia, where we were to
compete in the Gold Coast Half Iron Man as
Teams. Working on our weaker disciplines, I had
put my name down to attend this camp in the
October School Holidays, but unfortunately lack
of numbers meant it had to be cancelled. But hey
there is always next year!!!!!!! Thanks Leighton
Warren.
